Frequently Asked Questions

Q.

What is timber procurement?

A.

Timber procurement is the method in which buyers obtain forest products. Some buyers may be purchasing or “procuring” for a specific mill, while others may be selling to various mills.  A "wood dealer"  typically has contracts to supply wood using companies with products on a yearly basis.  These dealers will work with logging contractors to harvest timber that is bought from landowners.  Don't hesitate to ask the company looking to buy your timber how they fit within the timber industry.  Do they have relationships with mill and sell directly to them?  If not, who will the mill be paying.  Who is responsible for paying you?  Please feel free to call Cross Creek Timber is you have any questions about the timber procurement system we operate within.

Q.

Who can purchase forest products from a landowner in South Carolina?

A.

Anyone. However, only a registered forester or a person working under the direct supervision of a registered forester can make forest management recommendations.  Please be advised that there are several buyers working this area claiming to be large mega-state timber corporations.  These individuals are not licensed to practice forestry and landowners should proceed with caution when approached by these buyers.

Q.

What are Best Management Practices (BMP's)?

A.

Best Management Practices are harvesting standards recommended by the South Carolina Forestry Commission. BMP's primarily deal with soil erosion and water quality.

Q.

What does TOP certified mean? Does Insurance matter?

A.

Timber Operations Professional. To be TOP certified, loggers and foresters are required to participate in yearly continuing education courses.  Cross Creek Timber, LLC uses only TOP trained logging contractors and our foresters are TOP certified.

Insurance:  Please verify that anyone working on your property is covered with both workers compensation and general liability insurance.  This protects you as the landowner if an accident happens.

Q.

Can you tell me the value of my timber over the phone?

A.

No.  All tracts of land are not the same. The value of your timber is directly related the size, quality and volume of the timber you wish to sell.

Q.

What does it cost for one of your foresters to visit my property?

A.

Nothing.  We will gladly, at no cost to you, come out and evaluate your property.  From this initial visit, we can assist you in the development of a timber harvesting plan.

Q.

Will I be under any obligation if you visit my property?

A.

No.  You will not be obligated to us nor will you be pressured into selling your timber.  Pressure tactics are not the policy of Cross Creek Timber, LLC.  Be careful if a buyer uses pressure tactics or claims your timber is dying. Investigate! We want your selling experience to be positive.

Q.

Is Cross Creek Timber, LLC the company to call if I want to sell my timber?  What if I am interested in buying or selling real estate?

A.

YES.  Please consider us for all of your timber harvesting and real estate needs.  If interested in buying or selling land please contact Steven Smith at ssmith@crosscreekrealtyllc.com or visit www.crosscreekrealtyllc.com for a complete list of available properties or discuss the sale of your property.
